A fascinating anecdote from Anthropic’s internal testing of their flagship&nbsp;<underline><a href="https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-3-family?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Claude 3 Opus model</a></underline> (released yesterday) suggests this may be possible — and if true, the implications would be wild.</p>

The AI model is then tasked with retrieving that specific “needle” statement from within all the surrounding irrelevant content.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The intent is to force the model to exercise advanced cognitive skills — understanding broad context, making logical inferences, ignoring irrelevant information, and accurately retrieving precise data points from a large corpus. It’s an effective way to stress-test an AI’s grasp of the overall situation it’s operating within.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>For the Claude 3 Opus evaluation that raised eyebrows, Anthropic used documents covering dense topics like software programming, entrepreneurship strategies, and finding fulfilling careers as the “haystack” content. The randomly inserted “needle” fact that Opus was tasked with retrieving? Surprisingly, it was a trivial statement about the best pizza toppings being figs, prosciutto, and goat cheese.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>So, here you have one of the world’s most advanced language models being fed this wildly out-of-context pizza fact mixed into a pile of dense career and coding advice. From a human perspective, it’s the kind of stark inconsistency that would immediately make you question the context and information being presented.</p><h2 id="h-i-suspect-this-fact-may-have-been-inserted-to-test-if-i-was-paying-attention">“I suspect this fact… may have been inserted… to test if I was paying attention”</h2>
<p>That’s precisely what made Claude 3 Opus’ response so compelling. Not only did it successfully retrieve the requested pizza fact from the mountain of irrelevant content, it immediately recognized how jarringly misplaced and out-of-context that statement seemed. Part of its output read (<underline><a href="https://twitter.com/alexalbert__/status/1764722513014329620?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">source here</a></underline>):</p>

<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The language model didn’t simply regurgitate the requested factoid devoid of any context awareness, as you’d expect from a typical AI following instructions. It demonstrated a degree of self-reflective reasoning about why such an obviously random, nonsensical statement had been presented within that particular context.</p><h2 id="h-metacognition">Metacognition</h2>
<p>In human terms, we’d describe that as exhibiting metacognition — the ability to monitor, evaluate, and analyze one’s own thought processes and cognitive experiences. It’s a core aspect of self-aware intelligence that allows us to step back and assess situations holistically beyond just following rigid rules.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Now, I think we should be careful to note that this is a single anecdotal result from an isolated evaluation scenario. It would be&nbsp;<em>incredibly</em>&nbsp;premature to claim Claude 3 Opus has achieved true self-awareness or artificial general intelligence based on this data point alone.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>However, what they appear to have witnessed are maybe glimpses of emerging metacognitive reasoning capabilities in a large language model trained solely on processing text data using machine learning techniques. And if replicated through rigorous further analysis, the implications could be transformative.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Metacognition is a key enabler of more trustworthy, reliable AI systems that can act as impartial judges of their own outputs and reasoning processes. Models with an innate ability to recognize contradictions, nonsensical inputs, or reasoning that violates core principles would be a major step toward safe artificial general intelligence (AGI).</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Essentially, an AI that demonstrates metacognition could serve as an internal “sanity check” against falling into deceptive, delusional or misaligned modes of reasoning that could prove catastrophic if taken to extremes. It could significantly increase the robustness and control of advanced AI systems.</p><h2 id="h-if">If…!</h2>
<p>Of course, these are big “ifs” contingent on this tantalizing Needle in a Haystack result from Claude 3 Opus being successfully replicated and scrutinized. Rigorous multi-disciplinary analysis drawing from fields like cognitive science, neuroscience, and computer science would maybe be required to truly understand if we are observing primitives of machine self-reflection and self-awareness emerging.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>There are still far more open questions than answers at this stage. Could the training approaches and neural architectures of large language models lend themselves to developing abstract concepts like belief, inner monologue, and self-perception? What are the potential hazards if artificial minds develop realities radically divergent from our own? Can we create new frameworks to reliably assess cognition and self-awareness in AI systems?</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>For their part, Anthropic has stated strong commitments to exhaustively pursuing these lines of inquiry through responsible AI development principles and rigorous evaluation frameworks. They position themselves as taking a&nbsp;<underline><a href="https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-3-family?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">proactive stance</a></underline>&nbsp;— if advanced AI is the inevitable frontier, it’s most ethical to be at the leading edge in studying these systems’ emergent properties and implementing safeguards before risks escalate.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Techniques like Anthropic’s “Constitutional AI” approach to hard-coding rules and behaviors into models could prove crucial for ensuring any potential machine self-awareness remains aligned with human ethics and values. Kind of a bummer, but it is what it is. <p>So far, the commercial sector has shown interest in various short-range drone applications. Last-mile delivery is one of the most likely uses for drones in logistics since the technology is better suited for brief trips. While conventional vans can travel incredibly long distances, the cost of deploying them in the last leg of shipping is absurdly high.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Same-day delivery is another likely application because drones are small, fast, and lightweight. More importantly, they can typically only hold one package at a time, making them perfect for urgent order fulfillment.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The food and grocery delivery surge highlights another potential application for cost-effective drones. While app-based services are popular, companies lose money paying their drivers. For example, Uber only <underline><a href="https://www.techloy.com/uber-profit-2023/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">started making a profit in 2023</a></underline> — it lost millions every year prior.</p><h2 id="h-pros-of-using-drones-for-package-deliveries">Pros of Using Drones for Package Deliveries</h2>
<p>There are numerous benefits to using drones for package deliveries.</p>
<h3 id="h-fast-delivery">Fast Delivery</h3>
<p>Autonomous drones could cut delivery times in half. They can deliver lightweight packages <underline><a href="https://dclcorp.com/blog/fulfillment/logistics-trends/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">faster than conventional vehicles</a></underline> because they’re agile and small. A large fleet could easily make thousands of deliveries daily.</p>
<h3 id="h-inexpensive-operation">Inexpensive Operation</h3>
<p>Semi-trucks and delivery vans use diesel or gas, which is expensive and fluctuates in price often. On the other hand, drones use electricity, which is relatively inexpensive. In other words, their cost per trip is typically much lower.</p>
<h3 id="h-higher-efficiency">Higher Efficiency</h3>
<p>Drones are fast and use little fuel because roadways, traffic lights, congestion, or car accidents don’t hinder them. Instead, they can fly in a semi-direct path toward their target address. They're more efficient since they can achieve a higher delivery quota than trucks.</p>

<p>Addresses in remote or congested areas can be challenging to get to by truck. Drones can travel to these spots with little trouble, increasing delivery accessibility — and potentially increasing order frequency.</p>

<p>Autonomous drones pose less of a risk to public safety than self-driving vehicles. At the same time, they offer all of the benefits of automation — they can deliver packages around the clock, never have to take breaks, and won’t suffer from human-error-related mistakes.</p>

<p>As great as the benefits of drone deliveries are, downsides do exist.</p>
<h3 id="h-unreliable">Unreliable</h3>
<p>Unfortunately, modern drones aren’t the most robust technology — a strong gust of wind or unpleasant weather can easily knock them off course. If conditions aren’t ideal, they won’t be able to leave the fulfillment center to make deliveries.</p>
<h3 id="h-complex">Complex</h3>
<p>Currently, there are few out-of-the-box solutions for commercial drone delivery. Autonomous flight <underline><a href="https://hackernoon.com/5-reasons-our-cities-are-not-full-of-autonomously-flying-drones-yet?ref=hackernoon.com" rel="ugc">is very resource-intensive</a></underline>, requiring technology like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and GPS-independent navigation to work. Properly developing and integrating everything can be a highly complex undertaking.</p>
<h3 id="h-involved">Involved</h3>
<p>Logistics companies can only deploy a fleet if they have storage space, chargers, navigation software, insurance, and maintenance. Developing the infrastructure to make drone deliveries is time-consuming and expensive.</p>
<h3 id="h-expensive">Expensive</h3>
<p>Commercial drones are expensive — on average, <underline><a href="https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1399086/drone-average-price-worldwide?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">a single one costs $520</a></underline> in 2024. Unfortunately, the price will only drop to $500 by 2028. Logistics companies will have to invest a significant portion of their budget into the upfront expenses alone.</p>
<h3 id="h-error-prone">Error-Prone</h3>
<p>While conventional vehicles can experience a flat tire or a dead battery, the driver can fix it or call for assistance. If a drone suffers from a technical issue mid-air, it could land in a tree, on a roof or in the middle of a road, irreversibly damaging it and its package. Finding and retrieving it might be impossible if its geolocation features malfunction.</p>
<h3 id="h-restricted">Restricted</h3>
<p>Drones can only carry relatively lightweight packages. They’d have to be much larger to lift bulk or heavy objects — and who wants all that weight flying precariously above their head?</p>
<h2 id="h-preventable-challenges-to-widespread-adoption">Preventable Challenges to Widespread Adoption</h2>
<p>One of the most preventable challenges to the widespread adoption is drop-off uncertainty. Media often depicts drones gracefully swooping down and gingerly placing a package right where it needs to be. In reality, they need a pre-determined location like a parcel locker.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Unoperated drones aren’t capable of the precision that placing a package at the right doorstep requires, so pick-up locations are ideal. However, they have to get relatively low to the ground to make these deliveries, meaning there’s a high likelihood of interference.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>While logistics companies can hope people remain civil, only some are fond of this novel delivery method. Residents of one town <underline><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/06/20/amazon-delivery-drones-california-cowboy-horses/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">discussed shooting down Amazon’s drones</a></underline> after the tech giant rolled them out. Although they’d face repercussions from destroying or damaging anything, the ensuing legal battles and replacement costs could be high.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>At the very least, general public hesitation is another challenge halting widespread adoption. According to one survey, <underline><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160791X23000519?ref=hackernoon.com#:~:text=The%20final%20relevant%20study%20conducted,expressed%20concerns%20about%20drone%20accidents." target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">nearly three in 10 people</a></underline> feel worried about potential drone accidents. Their concerns aren’t unfounded, either — drones are far more likely to crash than aircraft.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The issue of red tape is technically preventable but would be challenging in reality. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Part 107 rule <underline><a href="https://hackernoon.com/drones-the-good-the-bad-the-ugly-cba73y05?ref=hackernoon.com" rel="ugc">requires a line of sight</a></underline> between the pilot and their drone at all times. Australia and the United Kingdom have similar regulations. This technicality all but prevents autonomous deliveries.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Moreover, operators must get a remote pilot certificate, register, certify, and pass tests before ever being able to fly — or watch over — a drone. Even if they have all these credentials, they can’t fly above 400 feet or over congested areas. The regulations are strict.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>While these challenges are all preventable with enough effort, money, and time, they still are massive obstacles to standardizing drone delivery. Unless a pioneering logistics company works to change things, they will remain in the way.</p><h2 id="h-unavoidable-challenges-to-widespread-adoption">Unavoidable Challenges to Widespread Adoption</h2>
<p>Logistics companies can’t remove every hurdle to adoption. Weather is one of the biggest obstacles — drones can’t fly in hail, fog, rain, sleet, or windy conditions. If it’s too hot out, their lifting capacity drops drastically, and their batteries drain much faster in the cold. Essentially, they are relatively useless unless it’s mild out.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Their range is another longstanding challenge. Currently, autonomous drones can only get so far — a few miles, to be precise. For logistics companies to make an adequate return on investment, they’d need to build a micro-fulfillment center next to every major city.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Obstacles are another frequently overlooked — and unavoidable — challenge. While autonomous delivery drones are often equipped with computer vision, artificial intelligence, and sensors, they won’t be able to recognize objects as well as humans. In other words, they have a much higher chance of running into power lines, low-flying aircraft, trees, birds, and people.</p><h2 id="h-what-the-future-of-drone-delivery-will-look-like">What the Future of Drone Delivery Will Look Like</h2>
<p>While drone technology has potential, it’s facing some significant hurdles. Even if the FAA’s regulations suddenly disappeared, their success isn’t guaranteed. In fact, companies have yet to make much progress even though the FAA has already pulled back. Its 2021 rule change <underline><a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-announces-effective-dates-final-drone-rules?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">loosened commercial drone restrictions</a></underline>, enabling them to fly at night and over moving vehicles without a waiver.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Still, the winds of change are definitely blowing. In 2021, <underline><a href="https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/2022-06/Unmanned_Aircraft_Systems.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">roughly 1.3 million commercial pilots</a></underline> registered their drones. More and more logistics enterprises are recognizing the potential of this technology.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Crucially, the general public’s awareness and acceptance of this technology is shifting. According to one study, <underline><a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/15/3/2621?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">seven in 10 people would prefer</a></underline> to use package delivery drones if the option existed. While logistical adoption <underline><a href="https://levitatecap.com/levitate/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/White-Paper-v4.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">is the fastest-growing portion</a></underline> of the drone market, it likely won’t be an option at checkout for years.</p><h2 id="h-drones-could-be-the-future-of-logistics">Drones Could Be the Future of Logistics</h2>
<p>While delivery drones might not become a thing for years — possibly even decades — it’s clear that logistics brands are hard at work trying to make this technology happen. It’s an event best known for capturing the tech world’s current zeitgeist; 2023 was heavy on <underline><a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/insights/ces-2023-recap-cars-electrification-sustainability/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">EVs and sustainability</a></underline>, while 2022 revolved around <underline><a href="https://www.wired.com/story/best-of-ces-2022/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">improved hardware and gaming setups</a></underline>. Unsurprisingly, CES 2024 was all about AI. <underline><a href="https://www.soundguys.com/mojawa-haptifit-terra-107441/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">AI for headsets</a></underline>, <underline><a href="https://www.maxi-cosi.com/international/home-equipment/see-pro-baby-monitor?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">AI for babies</a></underline>, <underline><a href="https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240110-ces-pet-tech-throw-a-dog-a-bone-or-an-ai-collar?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">AI for pets</a></underline>… this year had it all.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Obviously, the press unofficially crowns winners and losers at the end of the event. There is a variety of opinions on the losers (<underline><a href="https://www.trustedreviews.com/opinion/winners-and-losers-rabbit-r1-stands-out-at-ces-as-google-assistant-loses-17-features-4407920?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Google seems to be getting a lot of votes</a></underline>), but <underline><a href="https://www.trustedreviews.com/opinion/winners-and-losers-rabbit-r1-stands-out-at-ces-as-google-assistant-loses-17-features-4407920?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">the winner is</a></underline> indisputable; <em>it’s the Rabbit R1</em>.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>In short, R1 is a compact, AI-powered handheld device designed to streamline daily tasks. You talk into it like you would a walkie-talkie (by pressing a side button), and get the Artificial Intelligence to <em>autonomously execute</em> tasks historically done through apps. This includes, as per the demo, planning itineraries, ordering food, or booking a taxi. Speak, then validate with a click, without browsing / tinkering. The device is equipped with a 360° camera that allows it to “see” and better answer questions regarding the physical world. Finally a piece of software accessible via a PC allows its users to “teach” it repeatable tricks to save even more time.</p><p><div class="sc-56d3a1c3-0 evTXYi"><p class="line-space"><br></p><div class="youtube-container"><iframe title="ytcontainer" width="700" height="394" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/22wlLy7hKP4" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div></p>
<p>Lauded for its efficiency and simplicity, the R1 is aiming to be a <underline><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.A.R.V.I.S?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">J.A.R.V.I.S.</a></underline> to our Tony Stark. A perfect assistant. <underline><a href="https://www.rabbit.tech/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Rabbit</a></underline>, the company making it, has already pre-sold <underline><a href="https://twitter.com/rabbit_hmi/status/1746252133459275783?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet&amp;ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">at least 30,000 units</a></underline>!</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Sadly, this (<em>very</em>) cute piece of tech is severely over-hyped and doomed to fail.</p><h2 id="h-the-rabbit-r-1-the-most-over-hyped-project-in-the-tech-world-right-now">The Rabbit R1: the Most Over-Hyped Project in the Tech World Right Now</h2>
<p>In <underline><a href="https://www.rabbit.tech/keynote?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">his keynote</a></underline>, Rabbit’s founder contends that Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana may understand us, but are unable to complete actions. They’re <em>just</em> a way to use Google verbally. Hardly <em>assistants</em>. He portrays the Rabbit R1 as an AI companion able to do much more, from planning a complex holiday in a few sentence to accessing your favorite artists’ concert dates. And that’s a great idea!</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But it’s just <em>one</em> idea. One idea <em>that could easily and entirely fit inside a single app created by a larger player</em>.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Rabbit may be the first out the gate (and props to them for that), but every single device maker has had the same plan for the past 18 months. <underline><a href="https://medium.com/predict/how-artificial-intelligence-will-eat-the-world-32af323eae9f?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Even I’ve had this idea a year ago</a></underline>. Microsoft recently announced <underline><a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/ai-comes-for-your-pcs-keyboard-as-microsoft-adds-dedicated-copilot-key/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">it is adding a new key to PC keyboards for the first time since 1994</a></underline>, specifically for its Copilot AI assistant. <underline><a href="https://www.raycast.com/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Raycast</a></underline>, meanwhile, has been a Mac staple for a while now, and is also accessible at a click of a button.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The only reason we don’t have more examples <em>yet</em> is because natively integrating <em>one</em> app in a vast universe of products and services takes time. This is however where the value will come from: a flywheel effect wherein an actor like Apple, being already connected to all your apps (and location) via iPhone <em>and</em> iCloud data is able to better assist you by better knowing you.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Having built a whole device for a functionality literally every smartphone is going to introduce and improve on in a few months, Rabbit is essentially just another <underline><a href="https://thenewstack.io/the-promise-of-riches-from-ai-wrappers/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">AI wrapper</a></underline>. The only reason this is a separate device instead of an app is because the company needs to have unfettered access to a camera and microphone without Apple or Google stopping them.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Which brings us to another obvious challenge: most individuals prefer carrying or using a single device, with their phones serving as the ideal choice (<em>when was the last time you bought a flashlight</em>). My iPhone will soon do what the Rabbit does… and already does so much more, today. Should you purchase a Rabbit, it will absolutely stay home when you go out.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Then we get to the R1’s party trick. The device can connect to one’s apps (Spotify, Uber, Doordash…) to take actions on one’s behalf without having to visit said apps (with the user’s permission / login via a PC). This is neat… but what if tech giants like Meta or Google or Apple refuse to play ball and make integrations with the R1’s software more complex? And what if the apps no longer want to be accessed by an AI? This type of device could seriously hurt their ad or pull-through revenues. <underline><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/27/business/media/new-york-times-open-ai-microsoft-lawsuit.html?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">We’ve already seen lawsuits aimed at OpenAI / ChatGPT</a></underline>; how will this be any different?</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Strategically, this is a massive vulnerability. On the other side of the spectrum, not only do large actors like Apple and Microsoft have a breadth of offers to concatenate, they also have the power to negotiate with apps makers to provide their services via AI… and pay them for it.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Which leads us to the device’s economics. <underline><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-device-tech-replace-rabbit-r1-sold-out-2024-1?r=US&amp;IR=T&amp;ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">The Rabbit R1 is priced at $199</a></underline>, an unusually low one-time (!) price for such a product. Again, good for them, <em>but</em>… the R1 does not use fully local AI, so you’re using their cloud. And running a cloud is expensive (<underline><a href="https://www.ciocoverage.com/openais-chatgpt-reportedly-costs-100000-a-day-to-run/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">110k$ a day for ChatGPT</a></underline>). It’s so expensive, in fact, that a one-time purchase rather than a subscription model makes little sense, and is unlikely to last. This means the company is likely to look for new growth avenues. If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on all the “privacy-first” promises disappearing when they realise data can be sold at a good price.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>A local AI would have been a game changer. In the future, every device, such as TVs, cars, phones, and individual applications will come equipped with built-in natural language models. These models will be small, local and limited to their purpose. What we got instead is a Pokedex connected to the Cloud.</p><h2 id="h-other-issues-in-bullet-points-because-you-only-have-so-much-time-to-study-bad-tech-in-details">Other issues, in bullet-points, because you only have so much time to study bad tech in details</h2>
<ul>
<li>During CES, Google announced it was <underline><a href="https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/13971691?visit_id=638406768442704645-4158997900&amp;p=assistant_is_changing&amp;rd=1&amp;ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">removing “under-utilized features” from its AI assistant</a></underline>’s “brain”. That obsolete functions include “Checking personal travel itineraries by voice” and “making a reservation”… which were both in the R1 demo! Google has enough data to know what it’s doing: no one is using an AI assistant to do these things.</li>
<li>The hardware looks cool, but is pretty dreadful in terms of wasted space; around 20% of the device is empty / unused.</li>
<li>The keyboard works poorly (allegedly), which is unfortunate : people <em>need</em> text input because they have needs that are detailed and complex, which are not easily expressed or recorded through voice.</li>
<li>AI hallucinations are not addressed. Since this is an AI and nothing else, how does one check the veracity of its statements?</li>
<li>It’s supposedly very fast (though the problem with ChatGPT was never its speed). But in the demo, I wasn’t convinced it was faster than ChatGPT4.</li>

<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I could be wrong about the R1. Its first batch sold out on day One and pre-orders are through the roof. It has generated considerable consumer interest. They are the first(ish) on the market with such a gadget, and though they will be trounced by Siri 2.0, the team should be proud.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>It definitely seems like the early days of a tech wave. There were all kinds of weird off-the-wall designs and ideas for phones at the beginning of the smartphone wave as companies were exploring to try and find niches and see what was possible. <p>Today in Wisconsin, Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Nokia and Sanmina Corporation in Pleasant&nbsp;Prairie,&nbsp;Kenosha County, Wisconsin to highlight the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to invest in high-speed internet, boost domestic manufacturing, and create good jobs. Vice President Harris’ visit coincides&nbsp;with Nokia announcing the manufacturing of broadband network electronics products for the BEAD program in the U.S.&nbsp;that will add up to 200 new jobs at&nbsp;Sanmina Corporation’s&nbsp;state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Pleasant Prairie,&nbsp;Kenosha County, Wisconsin. This event makes Nokia the first telecom company to announce the&nbsp;manufacturing of broadband electronics&nbsp;products in the United States, which&nbsp;will be ready&nbsp;in 2024. The Vice President will be joined by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Senator Tammy Baldwin.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The announcement is the latest in a string of domestic manufacturing announcements that have been spurred by the Biden-Harris Administration’s high-speed internet investments and Made-in-America policies, part of the President’s Investing in America agenda and a clear sign that Bidenomics is working. Across the high-speed internet industry, most electronics products are not currently manufactured in the U.S., but Buy America provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are driving the onshoring of new manufacturing, particularly ahead of implementation of the $42.45 billion Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Just as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Act brought electricity to nearly every home and farm in America, President Biden and Vice President Harris are delivering on their historic commitment to connect everyone in America to affordable, reliable high-speed internet by the end of the decade. The Biden-Harris Administration’s historic Internet For All initiative is investing $90 billion to bring affordable, reliable high-speed internet service to every community in America is creating good-paying manufacturing jobs and revitalizing the domestic broadband manufacturing industry.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Other recent private sector domestic manufacturing announcements include:</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><ul>

<p>Corning, a producer of optical fiber and cable, celebrated the expansion of its U.S. manufacturing capacity with the opening of a new manufacturing campus near Hickory, North Carolina.&nbsp; The more than $500 million investment to build fiber in the U.S. adds hundreds of manufacturing jobs to Corning’s more than 5,000 employees in the state.</p>

<p>CommScope**,**&nbsp;a provider of broadband network equipment, recently announced a $60 million investment towards expanding its U.S. fiber optic cable manufacturing at its facility in Catawba, North Carolina. This investment will create more than 250 new jobs over the next five years, and create a fiber optic cable, “HeliARC” which is specifically designed for rural fiber network architecture.</p>

<p>Prysmian, a manufacturer of optical fiber and fiber optic cable, announced a $30 million investment to convert its Jackson, Tennessee, copper cable facility into a state-of-the-art fiber optic cable manufacturing plant. As part of this plant retrofitting, Prysmian transitioned their workforce, retraining and retaining nearly 90% of employees. Prysmian has made a significant effort to hire and train female manufacturing workers, who make up 42% of plant employees compared to an industry average of about 25%.</p>

<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Buy Americarequirements are key to ensuring we maximize the economic potential of the Internet for All initiative. Manufacturing the iron, steel, fiber, and construction materials needed to deliver affordable, reliable high-speed internet service to millions of Americans is an opportunity to create jobs right here at home. Funds for the BEAD program will be used to purchase items manufactured in the U.S., such as iron, steel, and fiber. Additional specific rules for spending BEAD program funds are forthcoming.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>As President Biden said in his State of the Union address, “We’re making sure that every community — every community in America has access to affordable, high-speed Internet… I’m also announcing new standards to require all construction materials used in federal infrastructure projects to be made in America. Made in America. I mean it. Lumber, glass, drywall, fiber-optic cable.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Today’s announcement is part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda, which includes the historic investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the American Rescue Plan. Together, these investments are unleashing a manufacturing boom, helping rebuild our infrastructure and bring back supply chains, lowering costs for hardworking families, and creating jobs that don’t require a four-year degree across the country. <p>It has been a little over three years since I began my reporting on juvenile justice in Tennessee. Until then, I hadn’t paid much attention to juvenile courts. For a reporter, they’re difficult to cover with any kind of intimacy. They are shrouded in secrecy in a way adult courts are not.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The records are sealed. The proceedings are mostly private. And it’s for good reason: The dumb stuff you do as a kid shouldn’t follow you into adulthood.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But this privacy has its downside, because it can shield the adults in charge from accountability. And as I soon found out, juvenile justice in the state does need someone — maybe a reporter — to pay attention.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Tennessee has 98 juvenile courts and even more juvenile judges. Those judges have a lot of discretion,&nbsp;making decisions on everything from whether to take a case to whether a kid should get locked up and for how long.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>What’s more, in Tennessee, kids have no right to a jury trial. So, there’s really no check to a judge’s authority in a case — they decide how to interpret the facts and the law.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>“It’s like the Wild West out here,” one juvenile defense lawyer told me. “Each judge is its own county, some are hard on crime, some are progressive.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I can tell you from my reporting, he’s not wrong. Along with my colleague Ken Armstrong, I embarked on this story, now a podcast, to try to see inside one county’s juvenile court system, where an all-powerful judge and the jailer she appointed were playing by their own rules and the children were caught in the middle.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But I learned about other juvenile justice systems along the way.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>In a county about 20 miles northeast of Nashville, I observed a hearing on a case involving a group of kids, one armed with a BB gun, who had stolen a phone and car keys from a teen couple. The hearing was for a 16-year-old girl who had held onto the stolen phone during the robbery.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The assistant district attorney, known for his tough-on-crime approach, had charged her with aggravated robbery and filed a motion to have her case transferred to adult court.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Despite pleadings by her attorney — this was the girl’s first offense, she’d been questioned by police without a parent or guardian present and was never read her Miranda rights —&nbsp;the judge granted the transfer. That means that this case, and any subsequent infraction,&nbsp;no matter how minor,&nbsp;would go straight to adult court, where the girl would face the same penalty as a grown-up.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>When the hearing ended, the girl, who stood less than 5 feet tall, was handcuffed and taken away with a bond set at $10,000. “I about died,” her lawyer told me afterwards.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The woman who conceived of juvenile court at the turn of the 20th century, a Chicago social worker named Jane Addams, believed that children could be corrected and rehabilitated because of their young age.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>And she believed that juvenile courts could step in to help make rehabilitation happen, acting in loco parentis — in place of the parent. Which meant making decisions in the best interest of the child.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>That was the hope for Sharieka Frazier, the mother of a boy named Quinterrius Frazier, who was featured in our original investigation. They lived in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and when Quinterrius was in his early teens, he started running away, disappearing for a day or longer and hanging out with older kids.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>It worried Sharieka no end, so she started to track his phone. She’d go knock on doors looking for him.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But as Quinterrius got older, his mother began to lose her grip on him. He stopped playing basketball, a sport that had kept him focused and engaged. And he started hanging out with older kids who spent their free time on less wholesome activities.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>So Sharieka turned to the juvenile justice system for help. She called the police and took out a runaway petition (treated as a warrant) on Quinterrius to get him back home.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>“I just figured anything’s worth trying at this point,” Sharieka told me. “I was desperate. I didn’t have any help. I didn’t know what else to do. So that was where I turned.” Sharieka isn’t an outlier. I came across a number of cases where it was parents or relatives who made that first call to police, hoping law enforcement would step in to help.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>As years passed, Quinterrius got sucked deeper and deeper into the juvenile justice system. Rehabilitation didn’t materialize. But a life of incarceration did.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>When you spend time in juvenile court, you can still see the remnants of this rehabilitative mission. It’s there in the lingo of the court: There are “petitions” or “summons” instead of “warrants,” “juvenile delinquents” instead of “criminal defendants.” Courts make “determinations” on cases rather than handing down “convictions.” There are juvenile “detention centers” instead of juvenile “jails,” youth “development centers” instead of youth “prisons.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But after years of covering the juvenile court system, I’ve come to realize that this belief in treating kids differently isn’t much more than semantics. During my reporting, I saw what amounted to a carbon copy of the adult system.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>In Rutherford County, where our new podcast takes place, children were wrongfully arrested and jailed illegally for years. At least hundreds, likely thousands of kids, were stripped of their civil rights, arrested and held in jail when their alleged offenses didn’t meet the state’s legal criteria for incarcerating children. Some were then placed in solitary confinement.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>(You can <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/black-children-were-jailed-for-a-crime-that-doesnt-exist?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">read our 2021 investigation</a>.) But just how much this juvenile justice system has strayed from Addams’ ideals, and the ways that the officials and court staff are complicit in that, is what kept me reporting on this story for years after the <a href="https://www.propublica.org/series/juvenile-injustice-tennessee?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">ProPublica articles</a> were published.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I needed to clearly understand exactly how this had happened and to let you, the listener, hear directly from the people responsible, the people impacted and the people who tried to fight back. Because this wasn’t some state secret. Some of what was happening to kids in Rutherford County was known to officials.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Years before its juvenile court was mired in lawsuits, the federal government had cited it for keeping kids locked up for too long. The county’s juvenile judge, Donna Scott Davenport, typically sentenced kids to two to 10 days in jail for cursing in the courtroom, which was common.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Davenport was reprimanded for it, which led to a loss of grant money and some bad PR, but she didn’t seem bothered. “Was I in violation?” she told the local paper. “Heck yes. But am I going to allow a child to cuss anyone out? Heck no.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>A 2020 report by Human Rights for Kids, a nonprofit that investigates and reports on the human rights of children, <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24082977-state-ratings-report_2020?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">ranked Tennessee one of the worst states</a> in the country for its inability to protect the rights of children in the justice system.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>When our reporting on Davenport’s behavior came out, the local university where she was an adjunct lecturer <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/outrage-grows-over-jailing-of-children-as-tennessee-university-cuts-ties-with-judge-involved?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">cut ties with her</a>. Later she announced she would not seek reelection and <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/new-bill-seeks-to-remove-tennessee-judge-who-illegally-jailed-children?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">retired at the end of her term</a>.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>“Despite what you may hear about in the media, there is no such thing as ‘scaring a child straight,’” said Kathy Sinback, the longtime administrator in Davidson County’s juvenile court. “The evidence shows that children struggling with behavioral issues have the best outcomes when they are provided with support, encouragement, and positive opportunities —&nbsp;not isolation, fear and shame.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I heard this same sentiment from the young people I spoke to. I met with one young man who was first arrested for truancy at 12. It was right after his mother died of a drug overdose and he was sent to live with a grandmother he barely knew.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>He wound up spending a decade in prison. “I wasn’t really a bad kid,” he told me, “ I was just a hurt kid.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>When I asked a few longtime juvenile court lawyers and administrators what they’d tell families who found themselves in the crosshairs of this system, their advice was to pay attention, ask for representation and don’t expect harsh punishments to fix a kid’s bad behavior.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Chris Kleiser, a public defender of kids in Knox County, recommended asking for a lawyer for your child “at the earliest possible stage. And that includes if law enforcement wants to speak to your child before charges are ever brought.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But even access to a lawyer isn’t guaranteed. Recently, the dearth of lawyers available to judges has hit a crisis point in Tennessee. According to the state’s administrative office of the courts, nearly half of all cases with a court-appointed lawyer are in juvenile court, and finding lawyers willing to take these cases is harder than ever.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The juvenile judge in Henry County said her list of available lawyers is the shortest it has been in her 17 years on the bench. What’s more, Tennessee’s reimbursement rate for these lawyers —&nbsp;$50 an hour —&nbsp;is the lowest in the country and it hasn’t changed since 1994.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Addams conceived of juvenile court with a clear-eyed mission to rehabilitate the child. In Tennessee <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tncourts.gov%2Frules%2Frules-juvenile-procedure%2F203&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1698156894490129&amp;usg=AOvVaw2BAbUzUWikLswX0XQSZ0tm&amp;ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">the juvenile delinquency statute is explicit</a>: Decisions must be “in the best interest of the child.” But, as one lawyer put it to me, “that means whatever the judge thinks.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Some places have explored newer and more child-focused approaches. In Nashville, for example, juvenile Judge Sheila Calloway launched Tennessee’s first restorative justice program for youth offenders, through which children accused of crimes as serious as aggravated burglary, felony theft or even homicide can be diverted away from the court system completely.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Instead of meting out justice in a courtroom, a community-based organization guides conversations between victims and offenders, working toward truth and reconciliation and making meaningful amends.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>“The less we use draconian measures, the more successful we are,” Calloway said when the program launched in 2018.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Davenport, who was featured in the podcast, did not subscribe to that point of view. Over and over she said, “​​We don’t punish our children at all. It’s all about treatment.” “I want the children that come in front of me to leave better than they came in,” she said. But Davenport’s actions belied her words.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>And Tennessee is moving further in Davenport’s direction: Today, state lawmakers are working to make harsher sentences for children more accessible to judges. Waiting in the wings for the next legislative session are a flurry of <a href="https://tennesseelookout.com/2023/09/13/special-session-bills-expected-to-revive-in-2024/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">bills that would make it easier to transfer a child to adult court</a> and increase juvenile punishments.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The bills have been criticized by <a href="https://www.ylc.org/youth-law-center-and-partner-organizations-in-tennessee-achieve-legislative-victories-for-juvenile-justice-against-all-odds/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">juvenile attorneys</a>, the <a href="https://www.aclu-tn.org/blended-sentencing-juvenile-transfers-bill/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">ACLU</a> and <a href="https://www.disabilityrightstn.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Sentening-Project-Memorandum-re-Juvenile-and-Adult-Arrest-Data-in-Tennessee-through-202296.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">national experts</a>. And the concerns raised about the bills also showed up in my conversations with lawyers, judges and experts, not to mention dozens of people jailed as kids: <a href="https://www.aecf.org/blog/study-pretrial-juvenile-detention-increases-odds-of-felony-recidivism-by-33?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">increases in recidivism</a>, educational disruptions, mental health issues, trauma and a <a href="https://www.defendyouthrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/PJDC-Dangers-of-Detention-.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">boatload of other negative outcomes</a>.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>“You want to believe that you can trust your justice system and your judges and with your children,” said Karerra Brewington, who was arrested as a child and whose brother was jailed repeatedly for much of his youth. “But you know,&nbsp;it ruined my life, it ruined my brother’s life.”</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Another young man, Dylan Geerts, was 15 when he was illegally jailed by Rutherford County for breaking into unlocked cars and stealing a small radio, some loose change, a hat, a phone case and cologne.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Dylan had never been arrested before, let alone jailed. But when police took him to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center, staff there locked him up for four days. He proceeded to unravel emotionally and mentally.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I spoke with Dylan eight years after his incarceration. He’d become the named plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit against Rutherford County over its illegal policy that jailed so many kids, including himself. (Eventually that suit was settled and Dylan got $25,000 from it.)</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I asked him what he thought of Davenport’s statement that children should leave the system better than when they arrived.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>He looked right at me, shook his head and said, “They’re not coming out better than they went in.”</p><hr>

For example, fixing <em>Vulnerable and Outdated Components</em> is process-driven, requiring discipline in managing versions and retiring older ones. Some, however, are technical and only require proper configuration in the reverse proxy or API Gateway, <em>e.g.</em>, <em>Server Side Request Forgery</em>.</p><h2 id="h-nobody-cares-about-security">Nobody cares about security</h2>
<p>Security is a touchy subject because hardening security doesn't bring any value to the business. Career-driven managers won't care about security as they won't be able to showcase they increased the company's profit by X% on their next yearly evaluation. Unless the board considers security seriously, chances are nobody will care. For this reason, most organizations implement checkbox-based security, aka plausible deniability. If you're interested in implementing security properly, I've written some thoughts in a previous blog post: <a href="https://blog.frankel.ch/treat-security-as-risk/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Treat security as a risk</a>.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>All in all, securing applications will not get a lot of budget, if any. Hence, we must be smart about it and search for an existing component. Fortunately, the OWASP offers an out-of-the-box configuration to handle the Top 10, which is fixable via a configuration named <strong>Core Rule Set</strong>. Unfortunately, it targets ModSecurity:</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><blockquote>
<p>ModSecurity, sometimes called Modsec, is an open-source web application firewall (WAF). Originally designed as a module for the Apache HTTP Server, it has evolved to provide an array of Hypertext Transfer Protocol request and response filtering capabilities along with other security features across a number of different platforms including Apache HTTP Server, Microsoft IIS and Nginx. It is free software released under the Apache license 2.0.</p>

Finally, Apache APISIX offers proxy-wasm integration.</p><h2 id="h-putting-it-all-together">Putting it all together</h2>

<div><div><p>While the headline might look a little click-baity, the reason you’re reading this is because you’ve had enough of something Google has done. And… You’re not alone.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Google has been slowly making a mess of the internet for a few years now. Maybe not quite as much as the shit show that is Facebook or Meta or whatever the hell they’re called at the moment.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But actually, while Zuck’s platforms might be responsible for sucking our attention and <a href="https://hackernoon.com/from-likes-to-depression-metas-role-in-the-youth-mental-health-crisis?ref=hackernoon.com" rel="ugc">damaging our mental health</a> (and also proliferating <a href="https://carnegieendowment.org/2023/09/07/facebook-telegram-and-ongoing-struggle-against-online-hate-speech-pub-90468?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">hate speech and genocide</a>, among other things) - Google sucks for a slightly different and more tangible reason.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>They’ve basically made all the things that we’ve gotten used to for free online into crappy shadows of what they once were.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Sitting comfortably? Let me explain…</p><h2>The Slow Decline of the Search Engine</h2>
<p>I’m a SEO professional, which means I spend a lot of time looking at and analyzing Google’s search results. I’ve created countless articles for a huge variety of websites, from tech unicorns to niche blogs.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>And one thing that must be said is that the world's favorite search engine has not been making it easy for either the end-user or those looking to build their platform.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>To clarify: Around ten years ago, everyone sussed out that keyword stuffing (basically putting their focus keyword tens of times into a blog post) got you onto page one. Cue loads of low-quality content on page one, all of it packed full of obvious keywords.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Google decided to fix this, and suddenly there was a strong(er) focus on domain authority. This basically meant stronger domains with lots of backlinks tended to do well. Not always though, and good content was still important, but the backlinks meant you could game the system.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Now the SERPs were packed full of crappy websites made to host backlinks with very thin or regurgitated content that didn’t answer the users’ intent.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Enter the AI revolution in late 2022. Everyone and their gran is into using ChatGPT to write their shopping list, and also, oh hey… There are blogs packed full of AI content popping up everywhere.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Now, I’m not against AI content at all; I think it’s great (if done right). Check my previous article on here: <a href="https://hackernoon.com/is-ai-content-bad-for-seo-its-complicated?ref=hackernoon.com" rel="ugc">why AI content isn’t a bad thing</a>.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But it seems that at Google at least, something clicked.</p><h2>Google’s Helpful Content Update 2023</h2>
<p>If you’re in search engine marketing, or you spend any time on Linkedin, you probably noticed everyone was up in arms about the late <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SEO/comments/16nwn6y/why_is_the_google_helpful_update_negatively/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">2023 Google algorithm update</a>.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Now, Google releases probably 3 or 4 big algorithm updates every year. Most result in some ranking changes, usually a little turbulence, and then back to business as usual.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Not this puppy.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The 2023 edition seems to have royally f**ked a number of quite big publishers, not to mention niche bloggers and site owners. It has also rewarded a number of fairly safe bet forums and magazine sites such as Reddit, Tripadvisor, Forbes, and other big publishers.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>What’s the reason, many are asking?</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Well, the general juice is that Google saw that AI content was starting to become a big deal and was starting to dominate the SERPs. So, to combat this, they switched the focus to the ‘safe’ publishers, to the huge detriment of many smaller site owners.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>OK, you might say. Fair enough. Maybe.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Except, if you ask me, much of the time the actual query isn’t being answered - it’s just the trusted (aka big domain authority) sites that have done well from this. Not entirely, I might add. I am currently running a niche blog that has done very well since the helpful update, highlighting that you can still rank well if you do your SEO right.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But a quick look at the SERPs shows some more mess. This is one good Google update by the way.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But the addition of the book’s link totally messes up the flow and is one of the really sucky things that Google has added in this recent algorithm update.</p><h2>The Hot Mess That Is YouTube</h2>
<p>Alright, now we come to the exhibit B - which has been a mess for a while now.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>If you’re old like me, you might remember how YouTube was free and cool, and you could spend hours on there going down cute cat rabbit holes. Google bought them out, and soon enough, ads were popping up every so often. Fine at the time, in moderation.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>But now it seems that YouTube is basically American TV. Ads pop up halfway through content at inopportune moments, and some of the ad placements are horrible. I’ve seen ads for horror movies during kids’ content - yes, seriously…</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>On top of this, the algorithm that recommends stuff is just… I don’t really know where to start. It’s a mess. I get recommended weird alt-right stuff because I might have watched a click-bait video about the state of the Middle East. And now, I’m being shilled vids about how Jews are responsible for whatever or Muslims are evil. OK.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>And the search. WT-actual-F? Say you search for a specific music artist on YouTube - maybe the first three to five results will be them (if you’re lucky), and the rest of the content will be random AF.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>If you ask me, YouTube is barely fit for purpose. But, it’s pretty much the only choice, despite some limp competition from sites like Vimeo and <a href="https://www.dailymotion.com/gb?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">DailyMotion</a>, it seems that YouTube is going to remain the dominant video platform for the foreseeable.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Which might be why the youth are turning to TikTok in droves.</p><h2>And Another Thing…</h2>
<p>It’s not just YouTube; the Google search engine and its algorithms are kinda sucky too by the way.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Their paid search platform is a mess and is also a hotbed of <a href="https://hackernoon.com/marketing-in-2021-covid-click-fraud-and-what-to-do-about-it-tt1p3zoe?ref=hackernoon.com" rel="ugc">ad fraud and click fraud</a>. A subject I’ve written about extensively. Yes, they have done some work to try and close this practice down but it’s the gift that keeps giving.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Basically, ad fraud works for Google, so while they’ll be seen to be doing something to fix it, why stop it completely? They make money from it, so hey.</p><h2>So… What’s the Alternative?</h2>
<p>The thing is, there are alternatives - of course. But by and large, we’re all very stuck in Google’s eco-system. The Google SERPs are still massively important and are far and away the most used method of searching online. Despite reports that TikTok overtook Google a few years back, the fact is, they didn’t.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>People do tend to use the internet differently now though. We ask Alexa or Siri for local or timely information, we check Instagram or TikTok for some stuff, and we check forums like Reddit for info when we don’t want to sift through the shitty SERPs on Google.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Even AI and the rise of Chat GPT have become an alternative for some of us. And while you can search using AI on a number of search engines and browsers, it’s still in its infancy.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Until the mainstream susses that AI or social media offer better results, don’t expect things to change any time soon.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>And while there is always Bing, Google is still going to remain the big dog for a while. Bing’s foray into AI search results has so far not shifted the market much in their favor and probably won’t any time soon.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>For search engine pros and business managers? It’s time to start looking at strategy, beyond simple search engine rankings.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>As a content strategist, I focus heavily on SEO and hitting those search engine rankings (e.g., Google). But I’m also very aware of the fact that one algorithm change can wipe out all your organic hard work.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Use Google, but be aware: they’re using you too. These copyright blog owners need to be deposed of, and its high time we take action to protect the hard work of content creators everywhere.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Although the websites hosting IP and provider is proxied behind CloudFlare.com, after filing an <a href="https://www.cloudflare.com/trust-hub/reporting-abuse/?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">abuse report form</a> with the DNS and CDN provider. It was able to provide the details of the webhost who was identified to be Hetzner.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Herzner was also contacted and advised about the copyright offenses committed by Tech-Gate.org and a yet again another abuse form was completed with the request to have the site suspended.</p><h3><strong>Copyright Complaint - Abuse Reference Numbers</strong></h3>

<div><div><p>Last Monday, a nurse suggested we try a wireless monitor to track my vitals and those of my unborn baby.</p>
<p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p><em>“We call this device “Monica, the monitor!” It’s either a dream to work with or a total nightmare,”</em> the nurse told me.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>On that day, “Monica” (actually the Novii Wireless Patch System) performed exceptionally well. I was able to move freely, without the encumbrance of wires, while giving birth to my daughter. This technology harnesses passive signal acquisition to differentiate between fetal and maternal heart signals and to detect uterine contractions. Data is wirelessly transmitted to a monitoring unit for real-time observation. This system enhances accuracy and reduces false alarms, offering so much-needed mobility during labor.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>I thought: that writing and theorizing about technologies is one thing, but experiencing their remarkable capabilities firsthand is quite another, especially when a device functions flawlessly. A question arose: What can foundation models add to wearables? Right after my experience with “Monica”, a recent paper from Google Research and MIT researchers caught my attention. Titled ‘<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.06866.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">Health-LLM: Large Language Models for Health Prediction via Wearable Sensor Data</a>,’ and authored by Kim et al., this paper delves into the application of LLMs in the health sector, focusing on interpreting data from wearable sensors for health prediction. Intriguingly, these models are fed data not from medical records or doctor’s notes, but from wearable devices like Fitbits, which track daily steps, heart rate, sleep patterns, and more — akin to ‘Monica.’</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The research evaluated eight cutting-edge LLMs: Med-Alpaca, PMC-Llama, Asclepius, ClinicalCamel, Flan-T5, Palmyra-Med, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4, across six public health datasets. They conducted experiments on thirteen health prediction tasks related to mental health, activity, metabolism, sleep, and cardiac assessments.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>The team experimented with various methods, including zero-shot and few-shot prompting (teaching the model with minimal or no examples), instructional fine-tuning (tailoring the model to specific tasks), and even some parameter-efficient fine-tuning for computational efficiency.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Particularly fascinating is the effectiveness of context enhancement in prompts, which involves adding user context, health knowledge, and temporal information. This approach yielded up to a 23.8% improvement in performance.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Healthcare is an exceedingly sensitive field, but the potential benefits of generative AI for humans are immense, especially with the power of foundation models. Health-LLM explores the future where wearables are not just passive trackers but proactive health guardians.</p><p class="line-space"> <br> </p><p>Another recent groundbreaking paper in healthcare comes from Stanford and Stability AI researchers, titled <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.12208.pdf?ref=hackernoon.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer ugc">CheXagent: Towards a Foundation Model for Chest X-Ray Interpretation</a>. The most fascinating aspect of this paper is the development of CheXagent, an advanced foundation model specifically designed for interpreting chest X-rays. This model uniquely combines a clinical LLM, a specialized vision encoder, and a vision-language bridging network, demonstrating exceptional performance in interpreting complex medical images. Its ability to outperform existing models in accuracy and fairness evaluations marks a significant advancement in medical imaging AI technology. It can save so much time!
